Which type of fan is best for a kitchen?

The best type of ceiling fan for your kitchen will depend on the height of your ceilings. If your kitchen has ceilings of 8 feet or less, you’ll need a flush mount ceiling fan, also called a low profile or hugger fan to give you enough overhead clearance. If you have taller ceilings, you can choose a fan with a downrod that’s the proper length. What is the best size ceiling fan for a kitchen?

The ceiling fan size you choose will depend on the square footage of your kitchen. Getting a fan that’s too big will overpower the space, but one that’s too small may not create enough airflow. Use Step 1 of our Measuring Guide to calculate the square footage of your kitchen and select the appropriate fan size.

Where should a kitchen ceiling fan be placed?

You’ll want your ceiling fan centered (or close to it) in your space. To avoid having the blades too close to cabinetry, walls, or other light fixtures, keep at least 18 inches of clearance space between the end of the blades and other objects. If your kitchen has a central island, you can install your ceiling fan above it, as long as there are no obstructions.
