LIVING ROOM CEILING FAN BUYING TIPS

To ensure proper performance and air flow, you need to choose a living room ceiling fan that's the right size and diameter for the space. Use the following tips to pick the best fan for your living room or great room:

Measure Your Room

Determine your room's square footage by multiplying the area's length by its width. For rooms up to 350 square feet, we recommend a living room fan with a diameter of 48" to 58". If the room size is over 400 square feet, choose a fan with a diameter of 60" or greater.

Pick the Right Mounting Type

After choosing the right fan size, you need to identify the best mounting type for the space. Start by measuring the height of your ceiling. Family room ceiling fans should have a clearance of at least 8 feet from the floor, and fans with metal blades should be at least 10 feet off the floor. Many of our larger ceiling fans include an Installer's Choice three-position mounting system for standard, low, or angled mounting. Use the height of your ceiling to determine which mounting system you'll need:

  • Low ceilings. If your ceiling height is 8 feet tall or lower, use a low profile or flush mounting system that installs directly to the ceiling without the need for a downrod.
  • Standard ceilings. Ceilings that measure 8 to 9 feet are considered standard height. You can use the standard-sized downrod we provide with each of our fans for installation.
  • High ceilings. For ceilings that are higher than 9 feet, you'll need a longer downrod. We carry a variety of downrod extensions in attractive finishes to perfectly suit your ceiling's height.

Choose the Right Control

After you've found the right ceiling fan size and style for your living room, choose how you want to operate it. If you have a higher ceiling and want to be able to adjust the fan's speed and lighting from anywhere within range, pick a handheld or wall-mounted control. Or, get the convenience pairing your great room fan with the rest of your smart devices by opting for our SIMPLEconnect® programmable control. Frequently Asked Questions

Should I put a ceiling fan in my living room?

Most rooms in the home, especially living rooms, can benefit from the addition of a ceiling fan. They act as a stylish fixture that complements the design scheme and promotes comfort with efficient air circulation. Living room ceiling fans with lights also bring much-needed brightness to spaces that don’t already have adequate light sources.

What size ceiling fan do I need for a living room?

The ceiling fan size you need for your living room depends on the area of the space. Look in our Measuring Guide where you’ll find a table that aligns the ceiling fan blade span with the square footage of a room.

What color ceiling fan is best for a living room?

Living room ceiling fan color comes down to personal preference. Choose your fan color or finish based on the colors and design scheme in your space. Some spaces look better with a fan featuring darker metal hardware and wooden blades in rich brown tones, while others look best with a bright and clean all-white ceiling fan.
